Hampton Downs 12 Hour 2012

Hampton Downs 12 hour 2012 was held on the 4th - 5th August 2012.

This was the third Hampton Downs 12 Hour, first started by Taupo Car Club. This year it was ran and organised by Hampton Downs, The Historic Racing Club, and Motorsport Services Ltd.

With a few other events close to the date the entries were not as strong as we would have liked, but this event was set to run no matter what.

The weather was really good compared to the thunder storms predicted with only a small damp period in the night practice on Saturday.

The Porsche RSR which had a 32-lap lead suffered an engine explosion with eight minutes  remaining in the Hampton Downs 12-hour race.

Drivers Andre Heimgartner, the current New Zealand Formula Ford champion, Gold Coast driver Matt Kingsley, Glenn Smith and John Goodacre could scarcely believe their fate after dominating the race.

Smith was driving at the time the engine burst into flames but he tried to limp home but effort was to no avail.

It left the Aussies Malcolm Niall, Brett Niall and Clint Harvey Porsche 997 to take the checkered flag for anunexpected victory.

The Porsche finished two laps ahead of the Porsche GT3 996 series Porsche driven by Phil Hood, Jeff Lowrey, David Glasson and Bruce Stewart.

Motorsport Services new lease car the Seat Leon Supercopa driven by Aussies Jeff Watts, Simon Piavanini and Mark Pilatti finished third.
